A remarkable recent increase in the diagnosis of vocal-cord cancer in young adults appears to be the result of infection with strains of human papilloma virus (HPV) that also cause cervical cancer and other malignancies. Investigators from Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) describe finding HPV infection in all tested samples of vocal-cord cancer from 10 patients diagnosed at age 30 or under, most of whom were non-smokers. Their report appears in a special supplement on innovations in laryngeal surgery that accompanies the March 2019 issue of Annals of Otology, Rhinology and Laryngology.

A retrospective review of microsugery performed in 18 Grammy Award-winning performers treated by surgeons at the Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) Division of Laryngeal Surgery has revealed insights into the treatment and management of vocal-cord disease in elite performers. Detailed photo-documentation is provided which demonstrates a range of microsurgical techniques that were created at MGH. This unique first-of-its kind investigation was published in a special supplement to the March 2019 issue of the Annals of Otology, Rhinology, and Laryngology, entitled Innovations in Laryngeal Surgery.

A new treatment for vocal cord cancer developed by Dr. Steven Zeitels and collaborators at the Massachusetts General Hospital has been the subject of several media reports in the US and abroad. The breakthrough was reported by Dr. Timothy Johnson on ABC World News, and was featured in the New York Times and on National Public Radio.
Dr. Zeitels, the Eugene B. Casey Professor of Laryngeal Surgery and the Director of the Massachusetts General Hospital has been innovating vocal cord treatment for precancerous dysplasia and cancer for the past 20 years. This work has culminated in a new laser treatment for cancer, which has produced the best results to date.
The Voice Health Institute (VHI) is an independent federally-approved 501(c)3 nonprofit public charity that was founded in 2003 by patients who suffered voice loss and struggled to find effective treatment. The VHI’s mission is to raise charitable funds to support research, education and outreach programs that will improve the standard of care for voice and upper airway problems. It has been the most successful organization of its kind and more than 90% of the funds that VHI raises are used to support these programs.
